In keeping with tradition, Tomales High School seniors stayed late after school Thursday to make their annual case for off-campus lunch privileges to Shoreline’s school board. “I’d like to hear from the seniors,” trustee Monique Moretti said when the topic arose, and 15 of the upperclassmen jumped from their seats. “Why should we grant you this privilege?” she asked. “As you can see,” Adrian Vega, the school president and a new student representative to the board, said as he gestured toward his classmates, “we have a sampling of the seniors who are all interested in maintaining the tradition. We’re a mature bunch of people who will maintain safety. We’ve all signed a contract, and if approved, we would all obey the same rules as previous years, to stay off [the Tomales Elementary School campus], be in class on time, follow traffic safety.” He paused. “Proper decorum?” board president Jane Healy suggested. “And not stay home or head to Petaluma,” Mr. Vega concluded. Ms. Healy noted that past classes hadn’t always shown up for the meeting, and one year the board had tabled the request. “No senior, no privilege,” she said. (That class of seniors showed up in huge numbers the following month.) After a strong recommendation from Principal Adam Jennings and a warning from another trustee that privileges could be taken away, the board voted unanimously to let the seniors make the trip to the deli or Diekmann’s. “Or K&A if they’re smart,” Mr. Jennings said.
