Laura Rogers, a public school teacher in West Marin since 1976, will retire at the end of the school year. Currently a first and second-grade teacher at the Nicasio School, Ms. Rogers said her teaching philosophy can be summed up simply: “Teachers who love teaching teach children to love learning.” Fresh from earning a teaching certification, Ms. Rogers took at job at Tomales Elementary in the older grades. Somewhat overwhelmed, she was relieved to be transferred to the younger children at Bodega Bay Elementary the next year, where her classroom had views of the water. The following year, she moved to Inverness School and later to West Marin Elementary, where she stayed until 1986. Ms. Rogers took a break from her job to raise her children, but she still helped as a volunteer and later as a substitute teacher and part-time reading instructor. By 1996, she was hired full-time at Nicasio School, where she taught for the rest of her career. After so many years educating in the small West Marin community, Ms. Rogers has taught multiple generations of some families and even two future teachers. She’s retiring this year to take care of her father, who lives in Kentucky. The next generation is already following in her footsteps: her daughter will soon finish her first year teaching at an elementary school in Boulder, Colo. “To every season, turn, turn, turn…” Ms. Rogers wrote in a goodbye note to the families. “I will not be a stranger, I will definitely volunteer, and will be ‘Ms. Laura’ to the end!”
