Next month Marin County voters will vote on Measure A, a proposed countywide quarter-cent sales tax directed at providing children with a stronger start. The ordinance would raise an annual revenue of approximately $12 million over nine years for the purpose of providing preschool education, childcare, health care and extended afterschool programs for infants, toddlers and young children. There are five preschools in West Marin eligible for Measure A benefits, including the Papermill Creek Children’s Corner in Point Reyes Station, the Stinson Beach Preschool, and Shoreline Acres Preschool in Tomales. Daphne Cummings, the director at the Shoreline Acres, said about 67 percent of students are on a scholarship program; she hopes Measure A would increase the amount of scholarships the school could award. “Very often we have families who may not qualify [for a scholarship] by a couple of thousand dollars,” she said. “By making preschool more affordable—and potentially free—it will lift a burden on families,” she said. But Ms. Cummings is concerned that Measure A isn’t being widely discussed this election season; in addition, about half of the preschool’s families reside in Sonoma County and will not have an opportunity to vote on the measure. She said she’s talking to the families that live in Marin to encourage them to vote on the measure, which requires the approval of two thirds of voters.
