Wells Fargo’s plans to add more lights and signage to its building in Point Reyes Station was met with disapproval by the Point Reyes Station Village Association on Thursday. The plans include changing the color of the awning covers and exterior walls, though the most contentious proposals were increased signage and the addition of six new gooseneck lamps—three in the front illuminating one new sign and three more on the side of the building that already glows more brightly at night than all the other structures in town. The association on Thursday voted to send a letter to the county outlining its objections to proposals by the bank, which the group pointedly called the only outside-owned franchise in the village. One woman argued that the glaring beacon disrupts the “ambiance and vibe of Point Reyes.” Though some were more accepting of the proposed sign than of the lights, one member said that they should hold firm against both: “It’s like, okay, we know you’re Wells Fargo,” she said. Others at the meeting wondered whether permitting or design review were necessary because of the building’s location in the coastal zone, but Marin County planner Vivian Lo told the Light that neither coastal permits nor design review are needed for signs and lights.
