Early this year, Marin County imposed new regulations on rentals in coastal communities and capped their numbers by town, an effort meant to ease the impacts on workforce housing. Prospective owners of short-term rentals in West Marin can now put their name on a waitlist for new licenses that will open on Dec. 2. A lottery will determine the ranking of all applications submitted in the first 30 days after the waitlist opens; after that, applications will be added to the list in the order they were received. Once an owner has obtained an S.T.R. license, they are required to also obtain a business license and a transient occupancy tax certificate. The county is asking existing operators to confirm their property on a list of legal S.T.R.s posted under the “What’s New?” button at https://www.marincounty.gov/departments/cda/planning/long-range-planning-initiatives/short-term-rental-str. You can email the S.T.R. coordinator on that webpage for any support.
