VANDALISM: Road signs in Bolinas have a long history of being creatively stickered and scrawled on, but last week vandals spray-painted black over most of the county-owned signs downtown.   David Briggs

Eighteen street signs were vandalized with spray paint in Bolinas last week. The affected signs included a stop sign, several no-parking signs, several park-parallel signs and signs prohibiting fires and camping on the beach; they were all located on Wharf Road and Brighton Avenue. Marin County road crews are in the process of removing the markings, work the county estimated will cost around $8,500. While some Bolinas residents are critical of outsiders and have taken guerrilla measures in the past to restrict tourism, Robert Goralka, a transportation manager for the Department of Public Works, said the county is interested in holding vandals accountable for any incident, no matter the location. In an email, Mr. Goralka said Marin places a “very high priority on graffiti removal” where it causes a potential safety issue, such as obstructing the visibility of stop signs; interferes with the implementation of community objectives, such as parking regulation near the beach; features offensive language; or is placed in high-visibility locations.
