Marin County Supervisors on Tuesday voted to hold a merit hearing for a proposed ordinance that will ban larger-sized vehicles on certain county roads. Under the ordinance, vehicles longer than 36 feet will be prohibited from driving on some roads. The ordinance responds to complaints from Muir Beach residents who say tour buses passing through residential neighborhoods on their way to Muir Woods—the county’s most popular tourist destination—pose safety risks. But many in Muir Beach want to see vehicle length limitations reduced even further, such as to 24 feet. “We think a bus ordinance is a good thing,” said Christian Riehl, the coordinator of the Muir Beach Association. “But we are concerned that this particular length limit won’t change much.” Community organizations have blamed traffic and safety problems on double-decker tour buses run by an international company, Hop-On Hop-Off, that transport visitors round-trip between San Francisco and Muir Woods. “The buses are making detours through Tam Junction and the backstreets of Muir Beach,” Kristen Shannon, a Muir Beach resident and co-chair of the Mount Tam Task Force, said. “These are really quiet neighborhoods where children play.” Supervisors did not specify which roads will be off-limits, or which agencies would enforce the new restrictions. “Enforcement is what will make this ordinance important,” said Supervisor Steve Kinsey. The board discussed amending the ordinance to read that any peace officer would be able to issue citations for vehicular size-limit violations. Supervisors also invited California Highway Patrol to attend the merit hearing, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
