Shoreline Unified School District superintendent Tom Stubbs says he resigned from the district after the board of trustees declined to offer him a two-year contract extension, which he had requested as the condition for his continuation. He offered no explanation for why the board had delayed discussing his contract for months. “They chose to give me nothing,” he said. “We didn’t really talk much. It happened rather abruptly.” Shoreline’s board has declined to comment, though the district will hold a special meeting to consider accepting Mr. Stubbs’ resignation next Tuesday. Public opinion on the resignation, thus far, has not been favorable. West Marin School/Inverness School principal Matt Nagle said the absence of a superintendent would cause a “distraction” that could take time and focus away from students’ needs. “We know it’s a bad situation and we don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. The resignation arrives in the middle of the district’s efforts to correct its structural budget deficit, which is still $615,000 in the red. Mr. Stubbs recommended that the district “continue with the work that was started.”
