The Stinson Beach Preschool will stay housed in a portable modular classroom kept on the grounds of the Bolinas-Stinson Beach Union School District for another two years, after the district approved a lease extension with the preschool during the district’s regular June board meeting. The preschool—which serves 20 families—has operated out of the modular classroom since last autumn, when it was installed by crane, said the preschool’s director, Susan Tacherra, who called the structure “a very functional and adequate classroom.” The classroom ties into the school district’s septic system, and because that sump tank tie-in is located 80 feet from the Bolinas Lagoon, the preschool was required to apply for a waiver from the Stinson Beach County Water District. (The water district does not approve any structure built within 100 feet of the lagoon, due to the latter’s wetland status.) The three-year waiver—which will not be renewed—reduces the setback criteria from the sump tank to the lagoon as outlined by the water district’s wastewater treatment regulations. It is unclear where the preschool will be housed after the waiver expires. “The building has to go away after two more years,” said John Carroll, the school district’s superintendent. “I’m constantly trying to keep that on people’s radar.” The preschool, a nonprofit Montessori-based program, now pays the district $10 a month. It formerly occupied a classroom on the campus.
