Four exciting exhibitions open on June 11 at the Bolinas Museum. In her curatorial debut as  executive director, Louisa Gloger presents a combination of art that addresses national social justice and local environmental issues. In the main gallery, “Helina Metaferia: All Put Together” takes up the history of social justice activism by women of color. The artist’s vibrant collages, tapestry and video tell compelling stories of struggle, perseverance and collective engagement. Metaferia has received critical acclaim for giving voice to timely issues, and we are thrilled to mount this important exhibition.

In the Coastal Marin Artists Gallery is “Ole Schell: The Magic of Creating a Western Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.” Growing up in Bolinas, Schell witnessed the decline of overwintering monarch populations. This show brings together video, contemporary art, science and educational materials to share his story of partnering with the Xerces Society, SPAWN and other organizations to transform his family beef ranch into a nurturing butterfly sanctuary.

In the Photography Gallery exhibition “Elizabeth Weber: Homage to the Western Monarch Butterfly,” the artist captures the life cycle of monarchs in elegant photographs created by printing black-and-white images on vellum and adding gold color. Weber grew up on her parents’ Star Route Farm and is involved with Schell and the butterfly sanctuary.

In the new History Room exhibit, “The History of the Bolinas Community Mural Project,” Harriet Kossman shares the vibrant story of the multi-generational collaborators who have worked on the various iterations of the mural on the wall of the Nassrah family’s Bolinas Market since 1979. Please join us on June 11 for artist and curator talks from 2 to 3 p.m. and a wine reception from 3 to 5 p.m. As always, admission to the exhibitions is free, and everyone is welcome.
