The sun will not set before 8 p.m. in West Marin for the next few months, and with longer summer nights ahead, some artists in Point Reyes Station are making sure there will be plenty to do. Starting Friday, June 7, a group of galleries in town will open their spaces to the public from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. The art walk series will run through October. “I feel like we have a pretty strong critical mass of art spaces in Point Reyes right now,” lead organizer Shelley Rugg said. “It’s a great way to give more exposure to the artists and their artwork.” Ms. Rugg is the executive director of Gallery Route One, a nonprofit that runs educational programs in local schools and hosts contemporary art exhibitions. The idea for First Fridays arose out of her experience attending monthly art walks in downtown Long Beach. After pitching a similar series to several locals, including Chris Giacomini of Toby’s Feed Barn and the photographer Marty Knapp, the group started planning a version of their own. “We wanted to shadow the farmers’ market, which also runs from June to October,” Ms. Rugg said. “If it works for them, it should work for us.” The artists agreed to keep their doors open later, until 7 p.m., to help enliven downtown, which tends to fall on the sleepier side most evenings. Ms. Rugg hopes galleries will lean into the event and feature live music or an interactive experience. “It’s a great date-night activity,” she said. “People can walk around and then go to dinner at a local restaurant.” Claire Burns, a coordinator for the Dance Palace Community Center, sees First Fridays as giving shape to a creative current that is already quite robust. When Ms. Rugg approached the Dance Palace asking if they would like to participate, they excitedly agreed. “Instead of all the organizations feeling like isolated islands, this art walk makes visible the routes in between these places,” Ms. Burns said. “It’s a coordinated circulation between spaces and ideas.” More than a dozen galleries, art spaces, offices and shops will take part in the inaugural walk next month. These include the Blunk Space, which will soon open an exhibit highlighting portrait and landscape paintings by developmentally disabled artists from the Oakland-based nonprofit Creative Growth. Also participating are Gallery Route One, the Dance Palace Community Center, Toby’s Feed Barn, Leona’s Gallery of Art, Vita Collage, VISIONS, the Marty Knapp Photo Gallery, Monk Estate, the West Marin Culture Shop, Ink Paper Plate, Ernesto’s Studio, Captain Okō and the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin.
