Marin Organic announced on Monday the appointment of Jeffrey Westman, a Sebastopol resident, as executive director. The Point Reyes Station-based nonprofit promotes sustainable organic agriculture in a county that has grown its organic acreage from 200 to 20,000 since the group’s inception in 2001. Mr. Westman has broad goals of expanding education for kids about organic products, increasing staff and building the organization’s membership base. He told the Light that he’ll draw on his background in fundraising: “First and foremost, we really have to beef up our fundraising efforts.” Mr. Westman said that by next July, he hopes to see the nonprofit’s funds at least double, to $1 million. “My goal is to go way beyond the present-day reality and build a far more active and robust organization,” he said. And he has dreamed big before, having spent 13 years in Sweden, where he turned an “overgrown and tangled” former dairy farm into a commercial potato farm. Back in Marin, he owns a two-acre plot on which he raises goats and vegetables to feed his family.
