One kayaker was killed and another survived with minor injuries when their kayaks overturned sometime after noon last Wednesday off Dillon Beach. 55-year old Nick Anast, a professor of life sciences at Santa Rosa Junior College, had launched from Miller Boat Launch that morning; the pair had made it to Dillon Beach, but sometime on their return, Mr. Anast capsized. He held onto his partner’s kayak “for quite a while” after his kayak took on water and overturned, Marin County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Scott Anderson reported. Mr. Anast eventually lost consciousness, drifted out to sea and was recovered by the Coast Guard. The cause of death will be determined following an autopsy. A California Highway Patrol helicopter located the survivor, a 39-year-old man from Santa Rosa, close to 6 p.m. stranded on rocks north of the beach. The man showed no outward signs of injury. (The chopper then went out to locate Mr. Anast, but could only find a paddle and a life jacket in the surf.) Last Wednesday’s incident marks the second time in recent months that rescue teams have responded to kayaker distress calls off Dillon Beach.
