Clamshell beads and basketry, paintings and block prints, papier mâché and traditional regalia highlight the contemporary culture of California native peoples in an exhibit at Gallery Route One through May 11. Meyokeeskow Marrufo, an Eastern Pomo curator from Clear Lake Basin, brought together works from 13 legacy and emerging artists from Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok communities. The exhibition, “Maakon/Yowa: Grounded in Coast Miwok,” reflects a deep connection to the idea of home and the natural world. Ms. Marrufo has curated multiple shows throughout the state that advance the California Indian art movement. She previously worked as the environmental director at the Guidiville Rancheria before developing an art practice that has always been intertwined with the flora, fauna, human and spiritual communities of California. Curating, she said, comes naturally to her. “You have to know how things go together and what makes sense,” she said. “Are you teaching something? Are you telling a story? I love telling a story.” As you enter the gallery, a mannequin adorned with traditional regalia stands beside black-and-white photographs by artist Robin Meely. The images are soft and inviting, depicting the intimate moments that occur when traditions are passed from one generation to another. Across the room, the late Kathleen R. Smith’s watercolor painting “To Dream of Balance Between Heaven and Earth” hangs on a wall, illustrating the soil, sky and everything in between. Two red handprints are overlaid on the canvas, one based in the soil and another touching the sky. To celebrate the end of the exhibition’s run, an Indigenous arts festival will take place on Saturday, May 10 on the green next to Café Reyes, funded by a grant from the West Marin Fund. Traditional Pomo dance performances will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and vendors and artists will be present from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with demonstrations of acorn processing, fine basket weaving and more. Members of the Latino Photography Project will sell homemade tacos, and some of the artists featured in the exhibition will be at the gallery to discuss their work.
