Hog Island Oyster Company made an appearance in an unlikely place over the weekend: Super Bowl LIX. Wedged among multimillion-dollar ad buys for Lays, Uber, Budweiser and a host of other national brands was a 30-second Google spot featuring Hog Island that aired for viewers in the Bay Area. It showed C.E.O. John Finger cruising around Tomales Bay in an oyster boat while touting the benefits of artificial intelligence. In particular, he was singing the praises of Gemini, the A.I. program embedded in Google Workspace. The ad was part of Google’s 50/50 campaign, which highlights the way small businesses in all 50 states are using Gemini to handle daily tasks, freeing them up to focus on their passions. The spot was not aired nationally, but broadcast on KTVU, the local Fox channel. “When you’re working out there on the mudflats, the tide starts coming in, the fog starts to burn off, and it’s almost like you can feel the whole bay breathing,” Mr. Finger says, walking toward the water in rubber boots and coveralls. “My passion is growing great oysters and creating incredible experiences for the community.” Hog Island has been using Google’s A.I. program to take meeting notes and analyze the data it compiles about the oysters it grows at its Humboldt County nursery and the nearly 3 million oysters it harvests each year from Tomales Bay.
