Gypsy jazz music is witnessing a renaissance, and one of the genre’s preeminent American guitarists is coming to Point Reyes Station. John Jorgenson and his quintet will play at the Dance Palace Community and Cultural Center on Jan. 24, the day after legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt’s birthday—which Mr. Jorgenson played on four years ago at the community center. “We had a great show there last time,” he said. “This time around, I would caution people not to be scared off by either the word ‘gypsy’ or the word ‘jazz’. The music is very accessible. Very high energy, very melodic and very emotional.” Mr. Jorgenson, who splits his time between Los Angeles and Nashville when not on tour, has played internationally with a number of his own bands, with styles ranging from rock and bluegrass to the world-infused gypsy jazz he will bring to Point Reyes. He has also shared stages with some of rock’s biggest icons, including Sting, Billy Joel and Elton John. (“It’s kind of like jumping on a moving train that you didn’t help build,” said Mr. Jorgenson of his experience on tour with Elton John, an 18-month stint that stretched into six years. “I liken it to a mafia family. If you don’t do anything wrong, you’ll be part of that family forever.”) After accompanying big acts for so many years, he was eager to play his own compositions—and dive into the gypsy music that has tantalized him for over a decade. It was Mr. Reinhardt’s music in particular that turned him on to that scene. “I’d never heard a guitar player with so much fire and passion,” said Mr. Jorgenson, who was asked to headline the Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in France with his quintet, a seminal moment in his career that validated his obsession. While there, he met Mr. Reinhardt’s son and grandson, and performed in front of some of the first people to ever produce the gypsy sound. (The quintet was the first American act to headline the festival.) The Jorgenson Quintet will be passing through Point Reyes on a mini California swing before a string of summer gigs in Germany. Tickets are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors and $15 for youth and may be purchased at dancepalace.org.
