The Marin County Sheriff’s Office substation in Point Reyes Station has lacked a commander since August, when Lieutenant Doug Pittman went on leave due to heart problems. Now the office has a green light to approve a temporary, fulltime lieutenant who will oversee the station until June 30, when the position will be filled indefinitely. Sheriff Robert Doyle said he’s meeting with captains and patrol staff this week to select the lieutenant from within the department. Pittman has worked for the office since 1985 and has worn several hats’—as the commander for the search and rescue team, the law enforcement mutual aid coordinator and the office’s first public information officer. At age 54, he was planning to retire in 2018, but suffered heart failure in August. He’s been off duty to receive treatment ever since. His absence forced the four other on-duty lieutenants to split their time and share command coverage of West Marin, which Sheriff Doyle, in his letter to the board, described as “a less than adequate approach to providing critical law enforcement services to such a large segment of Marin.”
