Opponents of a pesticide  known as methoprene scored a small victory last Wednesday after the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District voted unanimously to approve a six-month extension of an agreement that keeps methoprene out of West Marin. The agreement was set to end on Jan. 1, 2016, and has undergone a series of extensions since its original drafting in 2005. Over the next six months, and perhaps as early as January, the district intends to meet with the West Marin Mosquito Council, which is led by the Bolinas Community Public Utility District. Supervisor Kinsey will participate in the talks. “[We] are delighted to announce that West Marin now has a six-month extension on our current agreement with the District and will likely get longer if we are making good progress in our negotiations with the district,” Liza Goldblatt, a co-chair of the council, said in an email. At last month’s board meeting, council supporters and Fred Smith, who has represented West Marin on the district board, fended off efforts from a subcommittee to allow methoprene in West Marin starting on Jan. 1.
