The San Geronimo-based nonprofit Fibershed, in collaboration with UC Davis Sustainable Agriculture interns, is mapping California’s fiber supply in order to understand the volume and quality of the state’s wool, as well as find ways to help farmers process their product. While California produces just under three million pounds of wool annually, a lack of infrastructure means that almost half is either composted or in landfills, according to the nonprofit. Farmers and ranchers in California, with flocks of any size, can take the nonprofit’s survey. Fibershed works to connect artisans to wool producers, design fiber-processing systems and educate communities about clothing production.
