The 10th annual Far West Fest, a local favorite summertime music event, will be held on Saturday, July 25 at Love Field in Point Reyes Station. The festival is equal parts outdoor music gala and charity event, raising over $300,000 for local charities to date. This year, the internationally known seven-piece Latin, hip-hop and rock band Ozomatli will headline a lineup loaded with local acts—including the Monophonics, the Highway Poets and El Radio Fantastique—spread out over four stages. The family-friendly event will also host the newly dubbed Roneil Powell Kidz Zone, where youngsters can enjoy face painting, dance and circus acts, clowns and light acoustic music. The festival incorporates a large number of local volunteers, between 30 and 40 of which are local middle and high-school kids who prepare the field, help with the Kidz Zone and serve barbecue. “The people who greet you are people in your community,” said Adrienne Pfeiffer, who helped start the festival. “It’s not like a huge festival with strangers in yellow coats. The welcoming atmosphere: it’s more friendly, more community.” Beyond the music and fanfare, organizers hope to raise awareness for nonprofit and charity groups in West Marin, such as this year’s primary beneficiary, West Marin Community Services. The festival has a long history of supporting West Marin youth groups and preschools, and last year the festival’s volunteer network created the Far West Fest Family Fund to provide financial aid for local individuals and families suffering from significant personal losses. “We created this fund out of a desire to help some of those people, but also out of a realization that these tragedies could happen to anyone,” Ms. Pfeiffer said. “When you’re grieving, the last thing you should worry about is money.” All net proceeds from the Far West Fest will go to the family fund, West Marin Community Services, KWMR and the Tomales Bay, Bolinas-Stinson and San Geronimo Valley youth groups. Advance tickets are $35, or $40 at the gate; youth ages 11 to 20 are $15 and kids 10 and under are free. Premium tickets, as well as shuttle services and camping packages at the Olema Campground, are available. For information, visit farwestfest.org.
