Eight mosquito species—two of which are known to carry West Nile Virus—have been identified so far in Stinson Beach, Bolinas, Marshall, Olema, Dillon Beach and Tomales, prompting the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District to announce that mosquitofish will be made available to residents a month earlier than usual, on April 17. The district announced late last week that it has received 100 percent more calls so far this year than it did at this point last year. The district has attributed the mosquito boom to drought conditions and unseasonably warm weather that has encouraged the spawning of many aggressive species seen months earlier than normally anticipated. Residents with ponds, water troughs and other water features may obtain mosquitofish, a fish species nonnative to California that can consume up to three times their body weight in mosquito larvae each day. Residents may pick up mosquitofish at the district’s office at 595 Helman Lane, Cotati, or may submit a delivery request online or by calling (800) 231.3236.
