Preliminary drilling at the Green Bridge late last month was the only work that Caltrans has planned for this year at the century old Point Reyes Station bridge, which will be fully demolished and rebuilt by the end of 2028. Caltrans spokesman Matt O’Donnell said the test drilling determined the depth of the bedrock—95 feet deep. That information will help designers understand the maximum weight the new bridge will be able to hold. The rebuild will have wider shoulders and sidewalks and curb ramps that will be A.D.A.-compliant. A new crosswalk will be added across Levee Road at the Highway 1 intersection. Mr. O’Donnell said Caltrans does not have any more drilling or maintenance planned on the bridge for the remainder of the year. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2026 and be complete by the summer of 2028. In 2011, Caltrans determined that the bridge did not meet safety and seismic design standards and would have to be replaced rather than simply retrofitted. A group of concerned citizens who opposed the replacement sued the agency, but an appeals court dismissed their case last September.
