Documentary buffs rejoice: the first annual Stinson Beach Documentary Festival is scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 7. Five films released in the last year will be shown over the course of three evenings; from profiles to politics to pelicans, the selection covers a wide range of subjects. “We were looking for a mix of heavier and lighter films, and films that have a local interest,” said spokeswoman Harriet Moss. The idea for the festival originated with Stinson Beach residents Lynette and Jamie Sutton, who split their time between California and Homer, Alaska, where they own a movie theater and have hosted a similar event for the last 11 years. (There, viewers nibble on reindeer sausages while sitting on sofas or theater seats.) The opening night gala on Friday will consist of a “Taste of West Marin” dinner menu, a short film and live music. The evening’s feature film will be “This Ain’t No Mouse Music,” a profile of Chris Strachwitz, the founder of Arhoolie Records who spent the last 40 years discovering and recording the musical traditions of America. Director Maureen Gosling will be present to speak briefly before the film, and Mr. Strachwitz will be available for a Q & A. Saturday and Sunday’s events will each feature two films, preceded by a picnic dinner catered by Heidi Lundy and Blue Mason Catering. Tickets can be bought separately on any night, but picnic dinners must be pre-ordered. For details, visit stinsondocfest.org.
