Love shingled homes but hate stucco? Feel strongly about where new buildings should position their parking spaces? Unincorporated Marin will soon have design guidelines dictating the appearance of new multifamily and mixed-use development, and is asking residents to help set the standard. The guidelines, which are expected to improve “sustainable development patterns” and help speed along review processes, will be created through a public review process and will be used by designers and builders. The guidelines will be developed between now and December, with a final draft presented to the Planning Commission in January. Residents have already begun receiving a “visual preference survey,” asking them to rate various types of building design on a scale of one to five. “These guidelines…should clearly set out the county’s expectations for creating vibrant and environmentally responsible places where residents live, work and socialize,” Community Development Agency Director Brian Crawford said.
