At the request of Board President Steve Kinsey, Marin Supervisors on Tuesday adopted a resolution supporting recent state actions relating to the California Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, known as the Dream Act. The package of laws allows children who were brought into the United States under the age of 16 without proper immigration documentation to apply for student financial aid benefits. Individuals must have attended school on a regular basis and otherwise meet in-state tuition and GPA requirements to apply for student financial aid benefits. The resolution states that “These young people came to this country as children,” and goes on to say that, as President Obama has said many times, it “makes no sense to remove productive young people” who are Americans in every way but on paper and “are not this administration’s priority for removal.” By the terms of the resolution, the board encourages county institutions to help facilitate ongoing efforts to help foreign-born students apply for financial aid as they try to “improve their lives and participate in the American dream.”
