Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company hosts its seventh “non-serious” golf tournament benefitting local charities next Thursday, August 29. The four-person shamble, in which each player hits from the tee and the best ball starts the game, will be lighthearted and laced with comedy and alcohol. Still, the cheese company “takes the money raised seriously,” according to Jill Giacomini Basch, a fourth-generation dairy rancher who runs the dairy farm, creamery and culinary center with her family. One hundred percent of this year’s proceeds, which could reach $10,000, will be donated to the Marin Literacy Project. For nearly three decades the program has offered hands-on literacy classes and one-on-one tutoring; now a literacy bus on a daily basis visits West Marin playgrounds and ranches, including the Giacomini Ranch, bringing books to borrow, storytelling and literacy activities to young children. Ms. Basch said education is one of the company’s core philanthropic values, and she’s looking forward to giving the project a boost. On Thursday, the Giacominis will be posted along 18 holes at the San Geronimo Golf Course, “hosting the fun stuff that goes along with the golf.” There will be holes with ice cream, holes with alcoholic beverages and, to finish off the day, a cow milking contest. “It has to be the only golf tournament in the country that ends with a cow milking contest,” Bob Giacomini remarked. The day starts at 11 a.m. with a barbecue lunch, followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. The entry fee is $200 for individuals and $800 for four.
