A Sonoma County resident wanted on two felony warrants led Marin County Sheriff’s officers on a short car chase in Olema last Thursday that ended in his arrest. Jesse Nielson, 25, of Penngrove was arrested on suspicion of evading police with disregard for public safety, driving with a suspended license due to a D.U.I., possession of a controlled substance and other allegations. His arrest warrants prior to the chase were for criminal threats and a violation of a restraining order. The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. on March 30 when Deputy Jason Swift noticed Mr. Nielson’s burgundy truck parked near the intersection of Giacomini and Mesa Roads, on private property, in Point Reyes Station. After approaching him to inquire about the trespassing, Deputy Swift said Mr. Nielson, who had a female passenger, angled his truck’s tires toward him and began to drive. According to a video uploaded onto Youtube by Tumi Videos, the truck then smashed through a fence behind Toby’s Feed Barn and sped south on Highway 1. The chase lasted just a few minutes, until Mr. Nielson swerved to avoid a park ranger and struck an oncoming vehicle. Mr. Nielson’s truck hit a guardrail and landed in a ditch. Ed Strausser, manager of the Olema Ranch Campground, said it was a brief ordeal. “I heard a lot of sirens and then heard the crash,” he said. “I looked up the road and saw the pickup truck had swerved down into a ditch.” He said there was no damage to the campground. Mr. Nielson fled on foot about 200 yards before he was apprehended. The passenger complained of injuries but was medically cleared on the scene, said Deputy Swift. The driver and passenger of the car that had been struck were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
