Another statement of support for Drakes Bay Oyster Company came this week when a North Bay public-policy advocacy group called on the state to assert its aquaculture rights in Drakes Estero and on elected officials to investigate questionable science cited by the National Park Service. The North Bay Leadership Council, a Petaluma group comprised of 44 employers of regional business, nonprofits and educational institutions employing more than 25,000 people, endorsed the lease renewal sought by the historic farm and cannery operating in Point Reyes National Seashore. The statement asks assemblymember Marc Levine to push for the transfer of complete jurisdiction over shellfish farming in the estero to the Fish and Wildlife Commission, and asks Congressman Jared Huffman to support a bi-partisan investigation by the House Committee on Natural Resources into the science that informed then-Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to deny the farm a permit. The group’s endorsement came a week after the Sonoma City Council unanimously approved a similar statement.
