A family-owned Indian restaurant in Lagunitas was burglarized and vandalized under the cover of night last week, but an outpouring of community support has the owners of Arti Café back on their feet. Since the attack, the business has seen more customers than ever, and residents have donated over $15,000 and three security cameras. “It’s unbelievable,” owner Noel Fernandes said of the generosity. “We’ve been crazy busy. Crazy.” At 2:45 a.m. last Thursday morning, a neighbor called the sheriff after hearing the sound of breaking glass. Deputies arrived at a scene of inexplicable damage. Outside, flags and banners were ripped down, potted plants were cracked and signs were pulled off of the wall. The vandal took a handle off a grill and used it to smash holes through the wooden chairs and break one of the windows. Inside, he or she took beverages from the refrigerator and about $200 from the register, leaving behind a half-full can of Sprite that was dusted for fingerprints. The sheriff’s office has no suspects, and no cars were seen leaving the area, Sgt. Michael Brovelli said. Mr. Fernandes, a Fairfax resident and the father of two daughters, has owned the restaurant for 11 years, and the staff is made up entirely of his extended family. Because a fundraiser exceeded the cost of the damage, he is planning to build an improved outdoor patio with heaters and donate the rest of the money to either the Lagunitas School District or the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. The sheriff’s office is not investigating the vandalism as a racially motivated crime, although a string of seemingly racist acts of vandalism has occurred in the San Geronimo Valley this summer. Many of the Black Lives Matter art pieces from the Fourth of July roadside art show were destroyed, and signs along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard displaying the names of Black people killed by the police have been repeatedly vandalized.
