BOOKS: Winter wildlife docent Marta Lindsey shared her new children’s book last Saturday at Point Reyes National Seashore headquarters, flipping through reproductions of the illustrations as she told the story to a small crowd of youngsters. “Little Gray’s Great Migration” follows a baby whale and his mother on their journey from Baja to the cold waters north of Alaska—what is believed to be the longest migration made by any mammal. Near Point Reyes, Little Gray notices a boat full of curious people and leaps over and over again high above the surface, a show inspired by a calf Ms. Lindsey observed one morning several years ago. The book is available at the Bear Valley Visitor Center and Point Reyes Books. The number of people that rode shuttles to the lighthouse, most of them probably to watch whales, skyrocketed to 21,500 this year, from around 15,000 last year. Though the season is nearing its end, last weekend about 30 whales were spotted off the peninsula, many of them mothers with calves.
