Supervisor Rodoni cut the ribbon at the new Marin County Health and Human Services building in Point Reyes Station last Wednesday, exactly one year after construction began. The building includes energy-efficient features, dark sky-compliant lights and some elements from both local craftsmen and the demolished building. The county said an expansion of the facility, which provides a host of services to West Marin’s neediest—including food assistance, child and adult protective services, public health nurses and mental health services—was necessary to accomodate as many as 20 staffers by 2023, to conform with modern privacy standards and meet A.D.A. requirements. But when the project was announced in 2015, neighbors protested plans to double the building’s size and use street parking; they later appealed to the Planning Commission, which denied the appeal but made cosmetic revisions, and the county ultimately went ahead with a smaller expansion.
