meteor
A meteor entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean just after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and began a quick descent toward North America, passing over the Marin Headlands. It broke the sound barrier in the process, creating a boom followed by a deep rumbling heard by people across the Bay Area. Multiple sightings were posted on the American Meteor Society's website, which allowed the group to triangulate its direction of travel. One person reporting from Tomales said, "When it caught my eye I thought it was a firework, but as I watched it I realized it was much farther away." The event may have left meteorites on the ground; Mike Hankey, an astrophotographer and software developer for the meteor society, said booms and daytime fireballs are often associated with meteorite falls.    David Briggs
