THE MARCONI CENTENNIAL BANQUET AT THE MARCONI WIRELESS RECEIVING STATION POWERHOUSE, NOW  THE MARCONI CONFERENCE CENTER IN MARSHALL, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

“The Maritime Radio Historical Society (MRHS) hosted a banquet to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first wireless message sent across the Pacific Ocean on September 24, 1914. The message sent by the Governor of Hawaii was received at the Marconi-built receiving station in Marshall from Marconi’s transmitting station at Kuhuku on Oahu. Beginning with transmissions across the Atlantic in 1901, Marconi built a successful chain of high power stations girdling the globe. The West Marin stations were a crucial link in spanning the Pacific, linking from Hawaii to Japan, Asia and Australia. RCA took over the Bolinas transmitting station from Marconi in 1919 and built a new receiving station on the Point in 1929. Closing in 1997, Point Reyes National Seashore and the MRHS partnered to preserve 83 years of continuous ship-to-shore wireless radio history and open the site to visitors. The banquet highlight, along with a superb dinner, was the presentation of an award by seashore superintendent Cicely Muldoon, to MRHS co-founder Richard Dillman, for his organization’s preservation efforts over the past 16 years.
