A San Geronimo artist famous for photographing nudes draped in the limbs of pine, cypress, oak and eucalyptus trees, now hopes to protect a grove of redwoods slated for removal along Highway One in Humboldt County. Jack Gescheidt is seeking volunteers to join the latest Tree Spirit Project photograph, which will take place at 7 a.m. on September 12. CalTrans plans to widen a section of highway that travels through the Richardson Grove outside of Garberville, requiring the removal of at least 100 old-growth redwoods. Gescheidt, who began his peaceful protest of the felling of trees through photographs in 2006, hopes the resulting photo will bring attention to the threatened trees and remind his audience of their spiritual connection with them.
