County supervisors unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday in support of federal legislation that would force the Coast Guard to give the county the first chance to purchase a 36-unit townhouse complex in Point Reyes Station for use as affordable housing. The legislation, authored by Congressman Jared Huffman and introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this month, requires the Coast Guard to sell at a “fair market value”; an appraiser chosen by the county and approved by the federal government would determine the price. The bill “gives us the opportunity to work with the community and work with a local partner, our land trust for affordable housing in West Marin, CLAM, to redevelop the site for affordable housing,” said Supervisor Steve Kinsey, who brought the resolution to his colleagues. “There are big challenges with it… but I think this is the next step.” (The discussion and vote was delayed about 15 minutes because Supervisor Kinsey was late, prompting his fellow supervisors to muse that he must be busy making pies in preparation for Thanksgiving.) Kim Thompson, the executive director of the Community Land Trust Association of West Marin, spoke briefly about the singular opportunity the housing complex provides before giving the supervisors more letters of community support. Supervisor Katie Rice thanked Supervisor Kinsey for taking advantage of the Coast Guard’s decision to divest itself of the property, reminding the board there are “few opportunities for developing new housing” in Marin.
