A ship that wrecked off the coast of Point Reyes over a century ago was discovered this week with sonar equipment and remote-controlled video cameras, a victory in the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s two-year mission to find about 300 ships that have wrecked in the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and in waters off the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The S.S. Selja crashed into another ship, the S.S. Beaver, amidst the fog about eight miles off the coast in 1910. The Beaver managed to sail into harbor, but the Selja sank—two Asian crewmembers perished—and its hull has since been colonized by a host of sea creatures. The wreck became part of a Supreme Court case that established “rules of the road” at sea.
