Norman Solomon, a journalist, political activist and Inverness Park resident, is running in an upcoming caucus to serve as a delegate in the Second Congressional District for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, at the Democratic National Convention in July in Philadelphia. The delegate caucuses on May 1, for Sen. Sanders and Hillary Clinton, predate the primary in June, so each group will elect a slate that can attend proportional to the amount of votes each candidate wins in the primary. (Our congressional district is allotted eight delegates. So, for instance, if half of voters in our district choose Sen. Sanders, then his top four delegate candidates attend the convention.) Mr. Solomon, who served as a delegate for President Barack Obama in 2008, said that about 50 or so people are running to serve as a Sanders delegate. But despite the fact that all are “feeling the Bern,” so to speak—and despite the fact that New York’s Tuesday primary, which Sen. Sanders lost, makes it difficult for him to nab the nomination—Mr. Solomon said that it matters who casts the votes; delegates can also advocate for issues on the party’s platform, which is also voted on at the convention. “It’s not just a matter of casting a vote… It’s about what kind of platform do we fight for. We want to make use of that opportunity for social change,” said Mr. Solomon, who noted that the caucus will be held on International Workers Day, particularly meaningful given the candidate’s populism and progressive platform. If Mr. Solomon wins, he said that he would advocate for “Medicare for all” and “the end of perpetual warfare.” The caucus for Bernie Sanders takes place on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. (no one will be admitted after 3 p.m.) at the Marinwood Community Center at 775 Miller Creek Road in San Rafael, just off Lucas Valley Road before the freeway. People can check in, vote and leave.
