In an open letter to the Shoreline Unified School District community, the district’s board of trustees apologized for disruptions caused by the decision that resulted in Principal Anne Harris leaving mid-year, and gave assurances of its continuing efforts to provide the best education for students. In the letter, which was distributed in Spanish and in English, the board stated it was “limited by law in what information we can divulge to the public regarding personnel decisions and actions,” that there were “missteps” in the decision to remove Ms. Harris, and that while there was no consensus in how to handle the situation, the majority of the board supported the decision. The letter outlined three key actions it would take to move forward “in a positive and productive manner”: holding focus groups to seek input from parents, students, community members and staff to determine what qualities are desired in a new principal; holding county-facilitated meetings at each school to listen to concerns and “chart a course for future success”; and instituting mechanisms to improve communication between the district and the community. The board also stated it was evaluating the superintendent’s position and its own members and policies.
