West Marin Senior Services nabbed a grant on Monday for $20,000 to run a 12-seat shuttle between Point Reyes Station and Novato. The pilot project will run for one year. The funding comes from Marin Transit’s Gap Grant Program, which aims to provide transport to underserved communities and is now in its second year. Chloe Cook, the director of volunteers for Senior Services, said the program will help seniors for whom shopping locally is prohibitively expensive. During the pilot year, those who want to use the shuttle, which will leave from near Toby’s Feed barn on Tuesday mornings starting on Jan. 7, should contact her in advance. The shuttle will be available to non-seniors as long as all seniors who request a ride are assured a seat. Since the shuttle will leave from downtown, the nonprofit’s volunteer driver program will pick up seniors or disabled residents to bring them to the shuttle stop if needed. “We want to link the shuttle into existing programs so that it works sustainably for seniors or individuals who do not drive,” Ms. Cook said. West Marin Senior Services will contract with a private company to run the shuttle. The nonprofit is asking users to pay a $5 donation for rides, although people will not be turned away.
