A KWMR host and outreach coordinator for a marine sanctuary headquartered in Point Reyes won an award from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.  Jennifer Stock, who has worked at the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary for 13 years, won N.O.A.A.’s inaugural Sea to Shining Sea: Excellence in Interpretation and Education award for her work with the Oakland Museum. She spearheaded a permanent exhibit there about the state’s marine resources with a focus on the Cordell Bank, which is comprised of over 500 square miles of protected waters located 30 miles off Point Reyes and north of the Farallon Islands. Her job can be a challenge because the bank itself, a large formation of Salinian bedrock that acts as a hub for invertebrates and fish, is completely underwater. “It’s like talking about Mars, but that’s the fun of it, too—the challenge of bringing it to people,” Ms. Stock said. As part of her job, she also hosts Ocean Currents on KWMR from 1 to 2 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.
