A finding of architectural significance attributed to tea purveyor David Hoffman’s property in Lagunitas was invalidated last year due to a lawsuit over code violations and unpermitted structures. But some—including Supervisor Dennis Rodoni—want a county judge to consider the finding as he determines the future of Mr. Hoffman’s residence, a sprawling compound that he calls “the Last Resort” and home to over 30 imaginative structures. Supporters have started a petition asking the county to reinstate the finding of architectural significance, made by the Marin County Architectural Commission last year; doing so would allow leeway in complying with county building regulations. Per a Marin County Superior Court decision in 2015, the property is under the control of a receiver who is in the process of analyzing the site in order to determine a plan of action. Some supporters worry that plan, which must be approved by the judge in the case, will involve removing many of the structures they consider important elements of folk art and the environmental movement, such as a toilet that composts human waste. In a letter sent in January, Mr. Rodoni noted that the county had fielded “numerous letters of support” for Mr. Hoffman, including from the architectural commission, Oakland-based preservation architect Mark Hulbert and others. In his letter to the receiver, Supervisor Rodoni said it was his “hope that at the appropriate time, you will consider the historical and cultural significance of any structures” in order to save many of the buildings. He called the letter “an official request to include architectural and cultural value determinations on the Hoffman property” in the receiver’s eventual recommendations to the judge. A lawyer representing the county in the case did not return requests for comment. The petition also asks that the county, through the receiver, reinstate the architectural commission’s ruling. “We want this place preserved,” said John Torrey, a Lagunitas resident and advocate for the property. Mr. Hoffman’s next court date is in July. To read the petition, visit thelastresortlagunitas.org.
