Drummer Greg Anton says that music is the most expressive medium, but recently he decided to revisit that conviction in another art form: the novel. “[Music is] a pure expression of emotion. The only way to experience time is by playing or listening to music,” said Mr. Anton, who moved to the Bay Area to join the jam band music scene in the 1970s and formed the group Zero while playing with other greats like Jerry Garcia. “I have my thoughts about music,” he said. “But instead of telling them, I wanted to show them, put it in a fictional setting.” Mr. Anton, who lived in Jewell for 25 years before moving to Sebastopol, is also a practicing attorney. (He helps people with legal issues regarding medical marijuana.) His novel, “Face the Music,” blends his passions by focusing on a guitarist embroiled in a legal battle after someone takes credit for a song he wrote. Mr. Anton said that to devise his protagonist he drew from the many guitarists he’s known who excel on the stage but struggle with money and girlfriends. “From where I sit as a drummer all my life, all I’ve seen is guitar players… I’m fascinated with how focused they are on their craft, just watching them mess with their instruments and equipment. But I’ve also noticed some of the greatest musicians have trouble doing anything other than play great music,” he said. Mr. Anton will read from his novel and play with the band I Know You Writer—which includes Melvin Seals, Mark Karan, Banana Levinger and Robin Sylvester—on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. $10 tickets are available at facethemusic.bpt.me.
