An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 senior citizens received word last month that two insurers would no longer cover prescriptions at West Marin Pharmacy; however, the letter was sent in error, said owner Zsuzsanna Biran. The pharmacy confirmed that no lapse in coverage will occur for UnitedHealthcare and AARP’s Medicare patients. The pharmacy is now investigating a subsequent letter from a different insurer, Wellcare Health, also alerting patients to a cessation of coverage by the pharmacy. “Whoever gets a letter from anyone…bring me the letter so I can do something about it,” said Ms. Biran, who has fielded questions and concerns from both customers and doctors. The letter from UnitedHealthcare and AARP directed Medicare customers to mail services and to CVS Pharmacies and a Rite Aid over the hill. One of the first to alert the pharmacy about the letter was Bolinas resident Roger Kovach. He sees a doctor in downtown Point Reyes Station and by the time he walks to the pharmacy, “they’re working on it,” he said. “That can’t be duplicated. You can’t get that in the mail.” Ms. Biran traced the misinformation to a lapse in communication from OptumRX, which manages prescription drug coverage for many insurers. She said the business failed to complete a contract process with the pharmacy, which never received a final contract; nor was she notified about the looming letter.
