Don’t want to be hit with a blast of mosquito killer while out for your evening walk? Businesses and residents wishing to be notified about truck-mounted adult mosquito control measures have been urged to sign up with the CodeRED high-speed notification solution, a joint effort by the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito & Vector Control District and Emergency Communications Network. The system allows district officials to quickly notify residents of mosquito control measures being carried out within one-half mile of their homes or work places. But district public relations director Nizza Sequeira cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them. “No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Ms. Sequeira said. “If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called.” Those wishing to add their phone numbers to the system’s database can vist msmosquito.com and follow the Adult Mosquito Control Notification link to the CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment page. Those without Internet access can call the district at (800) 231.3236 during normal business hours. Residents wishing to exclude their residences from adult mosquito control measures may also do so through the CodeRED Notification Enrollment page. Because the service allows geographically based delivery, street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. “The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages,” Ms. Sequeira said. Truck-mounted mosquito measures apply insecticides as an ultra-low-volume spray. These spray units dispense very fine aerosol droplets as a fog that stays aloft and kills mosquitoes on contact. The amount of insecticide sprayed by the units is small compared to the area treated, usually about three to five ounces per acre, which minimizes exposure and risks to people and the environment.
