The owners of the historic Marshall Tavern are seeking investment partners to help renovate the building, which has stood empty since 1990, and create five vacation rentals and a public deck. In the past month, Daniel Altman and Avi Atid, Berkeley residents, have used Craigslist to put out a call for people to invest $300,000 to $400,000. The owners have all the necessary permits from the county and the California Coastal Commission to begin construction on the 5,880-square foot building, which was built in 1873, but they lack the significant amount of money it will take to do the job. “It’s ready to go. We just need the funding to do it,” said Mr. Atid, who runs a flooring business. He said they put out the six-figure sum to “test the waters… If someone has an interest in partnering, definitely we can talk.” So far they have fielded some calls and emails but obtained no financial commitments. Without investors, the pair would probably seek financing from a bank, he said. The project includes demolition and renovation work, new bay-facing windows, solar panels, the public pier and eight parking spaces. Last year the coastal commission modified the permit, originally approved in 2012, to allow for short-term vacation rentals instead of a bed-and-breakfast. The single residential unit reserved for a caretaker was nixed in the recent amendment.
