A 47-year-old San Jose man named Brian Phidet Ho died on Monday after he, a friend and two dogs tried to navigate their 13-foot Boston Whaler, which started from Bodega Dunes, through the narrow mouth of Tomales Bay. As they headed for Lawsons Landing, the boat “was overcome by waves,” Point Reyes National Seashore spokesman John Dell’Osso said in an email. The water was just 49 degrees at the time. Mr. Ho apparently tried to save his dog, and his girlfriend was waiting for him at Lawson’s, according to a report from ABC7. The friend, and Mr. Ho’s body, came ashore on the west side of the bay, land owned by the seashore, and the friend called for help from his cell phone as he held onto Mr. Ho. Rescue efforts involved multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Marin County Fire, Bodega Bay Fire and the Henry 1 helicopter. But Mr. Ho was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend and at least one dog survived. Mr. Ho worked for Casino M8trix, a sports bar in San Jose. In a statement cited by multiple news outlets, the casino expressed grief at his death. “The Casino M8trix family is heartbroken by the loss of Brian Ho. Brian loved fishing, he was a master barbecuer, an exemplary co-worker and employee for over a decade, and he will be missed by all of us here at the casino,” it read. The mouth of Tomales Bay is notorious as a dangerous spot for boaters. In 2015, there were seven fatalities in and around Tomales Bay, with more than one involving boats capsizing near the mouth.
