Former longtime District 4 supervisor Gary Giacomini said it was a “no-brainer, given the field” that he would endorse Dominic Grossi, a Novato rancher, in the upcoming supervisor race. Mr. Giacomini, a founding board member of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, said the protection of agricultural lands—a major part of his own legacy as a county supervisor for 24 years—was the most critical issue in the race for him. Although virtually every candidate has voiced strident support for ranches in the Point Reyes National Seashore and agriculture generally, Mr. Giacomini believes that a rancher is best suited to protecting ranches in Marin. “He will keep West Marin safe. He will keep ag safe,” he said of Mr. Grossi, a fourth-generation rancher whom he said had agriculture in his “lifeblood” and who spoke up in a recent op-ed about the lawsuit against the National Park Service in the Marin Independent Journal. That suit argues that the current ranch management plan process should be halted until the seashore’s entire general plan is updated. Mr. Giacomini said that although MALT’s purchases of development rights protects a large portion of the county’s ranches from future development, a good chunk could still be in jeopardy were zoning to change or its legality successfully challenged. “Once MALT has all the development rights, I can sleep,” he said. In the meantime, he will vigorously campaign for Mr. Grossi.
