Bolinas resident and library technician Camilla Ford once set out to write a letter and decorate its envelope every day for a year. The project only lasted about six months, but she said that people savored the epistles. “These days, even bills are just emails,” she mused. But Ms. Ford loves the art of writing letters, which inspired her to put on the two-person play “Love Letters,” by A.R. Gurney, at the Bolinas Library next week. The play, which was first performed at the New York Public Library in the ‘80s and subsequently made it to Broadway, is known for being relatively simple to stage. The actors don’t need to memorize their lines, as the play consists of reading letters the two characters wrote over five decades, starting in elementary school. “It’s a beautiful play,” Ms. Ford said. In a curious coincidence, her co-star Jon Cozzi, a tree trimmer from Bolinas who acted with the Hot Tamales Theater Company in the ‘80s, said his mom and stepdad once published a book of letters they wrote to each other. It was called “Love Lines,” and was written during the affair that led to their marriage. “When I saw this play I said, ‘They stole my mom’s idea!’” he said. Neither Ms. Ford nor Mr. Cozzi have seen the play performed. “If you see someone else, it’s hard not to do it like them,” he told the Light. “Love Letters” will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28 at the Bolinas Library. It runs roughly 80 minutes, with a brief intermission between the two acts. The event is free.
