The Marin Community Foundation is partnering with Lucasfilm to explore options for the development of affordable housing on Grady Ranch. “We are thrilled that George Lucas is seeing this as an opportunity to address one of the most critical issues in Marin County—making it possible for a broad range of individuals and families to afford to live in Marin,” Thomas Peters, president of the foundation, said. “In many instances this is housing for people who work in the county but can’t afford to live here and for people who grew up here but who now cannot afford safe, secure housing in their home county.” The Grady Ranch, in Lucas Valley, was to become Lucasfilm’s newest digital media studio, but the company abandoned its plans last month after the county delayed approval of the project—in part to review new environmental concerns and also because neighbors had voiced strong opposition. Lucasfilm said it will hand over its research to the foundation. “We’ll match affordable housing developers with that documentation of the site, and begin to scope very broadly over what [would be] a feasible project,” Peters said, adding that his organization is looking to create an “environmentally sensitive, beautifully designed, valley-appropriate development, with a keen eye on families or seniors, or both.”
