The beleaguered steering committee of the Foodshed, an Inverness-based cooperative, is asking participants to tackle new roles and help reverse a languishing membership that has shrunk by one third. The store, which stocks bulk items, fermented foods, olive oil, nuts, dates, local produce, cleaning products and more, had 70 members when it opened a year ago and now has 46. Sales dropped considerably in the last quarter, and only one fourth of the members fulfill their volunteer shifts. On the bright side, the group received a grant from the Marin Community Foundation in March and is on the cusp of hiring its first paid employee; members have plans for better outreach and facilitating easier membership renewal. During a brainstorming meeting on Tuesday the four-person steering committee noted that new items, including spices, teas, nutritional yeast and rapadura sugar, have been added to the bins; there will be squash, potatoes, onions and avocados through the winter, and members of Table Top Farm’s community supported agriculture program will be able to pick up produce there. “The time is now to be an active participant,” said founding member Molly Myerson. It is typically staffed on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to members 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
